Ashley, I cannot agree with this more. Though my solo backpacking time was not as long as yours. I'm so happy that you were able to do what you did. This is a great starter guide to people traveling alone. It's so fantastic.

I want to do it again soon. =)

This is fantastic. I have only ever travelled solo once, and it was only for a couple of days; I took a 22 hour bus ride across Canada to go to a Fringe festival in Edmonton, and I LOVED every second. It's no three months but it's amazing what solitude and new experiences can do for you! :)

This is pretty awesome. I'm not sure if I'll ever travel alone now that I'm married... but it's an awesome read.

Excellent advice! I spent 10 months from September 2003 to June 2004 traveling through central/eastern Europe and the Balkans, solo for about 90% of it, and everything you've said rang true for me - ESPECIALLY the bit about becoming a Yes Man.

There were SO many times that I just felt completely out of my element, with only a cursory understanding of where the hell I was and what the hell I was doing, and those were the times that I made decisions that ultimately led to some of my best experiences, be it hopping a train to Belgrade after missing the one to Zagreb, and discovering what became one of my favorite cities in all of Europe, or boning the English guy I met in Budapest, who gave me the best orgasm of my life (to that point).

OK, maybe you don't need to say YES to EVERYTHING, but the lesson here is that the further you stretch your comfort zone (while keeping one ear to your instincts, always), the more you'll experience, the more you'll grow, and the more awesome stories you'll have.

Love your blog, BTW. I've been reading for a while now, but I think this is the first time I've commented. I'm something of a neighbor - living down in Denver, and just love reading your stories about Boulder life. CO really is the best, eh? :)
